CERTIFICATION NEWS UPDATE
Training Center Offers Electrician Trainee program

The certification deadline for general electricians, residential electricians and fire/life safety technicians was January 1, 2006. However, as you may recall in our January 2006 Currents Newsletter, the California Apprenticeship Council (CAC) made special provisions in December 2005, extending the deadline for certification for those who submitted an application for certification postmarked by December 30, 2005 but have not taken/passed the exam. Every electrician who submitted an application and has met the December 30, 2005 deadline will need to complete the testing process by June 1, 2006.

For those who did not meet the December 30th application deadline, you must be enrolled in an approved curriculum of classroom instruction. The San Diego Electrical Training offers two approved curricula of classroom instruction: apprenticeship and the Electrician Trainee program.

The training center, in partnership with Palomar College, was approved for Electrician Trainee program earlier this year. This five-year program offers 150 hours of classroom instruction per year, with classes starting in the late Spring and Fall. The Electrician Trainee program is ideal for individuals who are not currently enrolled in one of our apprenticeship programs or who are unable to provide proof of experience in the field the individual wants to be certified in.

To enroll in the Electrician Trainee program, simply go to the IBEW Local 569 office to complete an Application for New Registration of Electrician Trainee. Bring with you a $25.00 check or money order payable to "DIR - ELECTRICIAN CERTIFICATION FUND." Your application and payment will then be forwarded to the Training Center for enrollment and registration with Palomar College. A copy of your signed application and program enrollment forms will be sent to you for your records. You must remain enrolled in the Electrician Trainee program until you become certified or leave the trade. The training center is required to notify the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) if you withdraw from the program. If your enrollment is terminated, the DAS will cancel your Electrician Trainee registration.
